01 / Overview
A public engineering challenge to take a software idea through the product-development process while documenting the work honestly, from the earliest decisions through to deployment.
Duration
90 days
A defined build challenge
Primary outcome

02 / Behind the work
The problem
Starting with an idea is easy. Turning it into a useful product requires decisions about users, scope, design, technical implementation and deployment. The challenge is to make steady progress while being honest about what does not work.
The approach
The work is broken into stages so that product decisions can be tested as the project moves forward. Short-form videos provide an introduction, longer videos explore the wider story and the HQ archive will hold the deeper engineering documentation.
Engineering decisions
Technical choices will be documented in context, including the problem being solved, alternatives considered and trade-offs accepted. The goal is to build a maintainable product while learning from the realities of implementation.
03 / Engineering
Implementation & technical decisions
The architecture will evolve with the product. Mobile interfaces, APIs, data, authentication, testing and deployment will be treated as real engineering concerns, with important technical decisions recorded as they happen.
Technology stack
04 / Outcomes
The intended outcome is a deployed mobile product accompanied by a public record of its development. The challenge is ongoing, so the final product and its results will be documented as they are achieved rather than presented as completed work in advance.
05 / Lessons
Progress rarely comes from having every answer before starting. The aim is to make considered decisions, build, measure, learn and iterate instead of waiting for perfect certainty.
